How Much Does a Record Collection Weigh?
It depends on what's on your shelves, but a few averages get you close enough to plan a move, buy shelving, or settle a debate with whoever is helping you carry boxes.
How much does one vinyl record weigh?
This calculator uses an average of 0.50 lb for a typical 12-inch LP, including its jacket. Real records vary: 120g, 140g, and 180g pressings weigh different amounts, and gatefold sleeves, inserts, double albums, box sets, and other packaging add more. Treat it as an average, not an exact weight for every LP.
How much do 100, 500, or 1,000 vinyl records weigh?
Using the same average, 100 LPs weigh about 50 lb, 500 LPs about 250 lb, and 1,000 LPs about 500 lb.
How much does a CD weigh?
The calculator estimates 0.22 lb for a typical CD in a standard jewel case. Digipaks, multi-disc sets, and other packaging can be lighter or heavier.
Shelf space
Shelf-space figures are approximate because jacket and case thickness varies. Leave some extra room so records aren't packed too tightly.
Moving boxes
Box counts assume about 35 lb per box. That's a planning estimate, not a shipping or structural-engineering recommendation.
